I currently manage a UK based car club and basically the VPS we are currently on is driving my users up the wall, the server load is always high, the site takes ages to load, and in general I think the server has been overloaded.
Anyway, here's the typical usage stats for the forums: · vBulletin · 2.6 GB of hard drive space used · 600MB MySQL database · 20-30GB/mo bandwidth · Now, I was wondering, is dedicated the way forward or would I get away with shared hosting? I thought dedicated myself but anything you guys have to suggest would be appreciated. In addition to that, I'd prefer a UK based host down to 90% of the users being in the UK and i'd like to reduce the response times as much as poss (if you don't think that'll be a problem i'm open to suggestions too!) Thanks for any advice you can give! |

If you want to stick to sahred hosting because of the support service it includes, semi-dedicated may be an option for you, you'll have enough resources to meet your requirements in downtownhost.com plans.

I suppose there is no need to have dedicated server for just 2.6 GB of space, why should you pay for unused space? Try to switch to the shared hosting, or another VPS provider. You always be able to purchase dedicated account when you really need it.
The reseller accounts may also be suitable to you... Extra money from reselling is not the odd, but only if you have time and resources for promotion. But if you're aimed of having a dedi - I might suggest to look up hqhost.net - their services are reliable and pricing is not very high. Also learn what are the most popular providers are offering - that will help to choose. Last edited by gofunny; 06-27-2008 at 06:17 AM. |

As for recommedations, I did not used any VPS, but I heard of HostV as a quality provider for them. Also there are attractive plans both for shared and dedicated presented at Ahosting.biz. I know this company and I find it reliable. |

Alice, you should know that semi-dedicated is nearly the same as shared, and for a vbulletin forum with increasing amount of traffic, shared won't be enough.
I suggest looking into vps deals market, the biggets players there being VPSLAND.com :: Advanced VPS Hosting, Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting, Dedicated Server, Web Hosting and Cheap VPS Hosting at VPSLink. |

I believe that the next step after Vps must be dedicated server. So I think that you need to consider dedicated server offers now.
I would recommend you have a look at Exmasters.com. They offer as metered as unmetered dedicated servers and this flexibility must be very useful for you. Good luck! |

Ok no more semi-dedis...
I think UK hosting is more expensive, why do not you want a US based provider to host? Have found out nice VPS deals from Globaltap.com - 10GB of disk space and 150GB of bandwidth for about $50. I think OP may also be interested in this offering. |

Think of ServerPoint.com VPS hosting. Linux and Windows are available from them. They offer network redundancy and high-end vps plans.

I am sure that dedicated server is the best solution to the existing situation. But the thing is that it is not easy to find the most reliable company. I'd like to add to the list of these good companies Ahosting.biz, hostmonster.com and hostgator.com. Prices are incredibly affordable but the features are fully loaded.
Their online business is based on support. |
